Sports are a great fitness tool for parents and children alike in order to build a more balanced body. Sports encourage participation, improvement of self-confidence and self-image. Sports are also a great outlet for energy, something children often have in abundance. They can strengthen the body as well as provide a great way for kids and adults alike to interact with each other. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the greatest things about this job is discovering all the new things that are out there for fitness and exercise. Whether it’s a new tape, a new workout style or even just a new gym that they are building, it’s part of my job to research them. What that means is when new ideas come traveling down the pike, I check them out, I write about them and then I hope you get a chance to review them and let me know what you think. The following is one of those ideas. I don’t have Comcast digital cable, but I wish I did, because I want to check this out: Read the rest of this entry »

Endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph. I like small, medium and large better because the first three sound like something straight out of Ghostbusters. Read the rest of this entry »

One of my favorite things is to get email from friends and readers telling me about something new or cool in the fitness world. Spring Planting

It’s been getting prettier and prettier here. So it’s time to start planning how to fix up the yard, handling the lawn work and taking care of the garden. Gardening involves a lot of activity and for those that think it might not be good exercise – think again. An hour of pulling weeds can leave you hot, sweaty and sore. I have always wanted the ability to grow things. My mom can sneeze at something and it grows green and beautiful. I am not so good at that. However, last year I planted several rose bushes and they did phenomenally well. I worked hard to maintain the area around them and to keep it neat, trim and alive. I felt the tremendous payoff from working with them and now I am inspired to build a bigger, better garden. Read the rest of this entry »

Okay, I have a challenge for folks out there. I talked about getting myself out of bed this morning and staying on target with your fitness goals. Someone suggested affirmations to me and I have no idea why I didn’t mention them earlier because I use affirmations and I have several decorating the pin boards around my desk. A little over a week or two ago, I told you that I hurt my foot. It’s still recovering from the sprain and strain I did to it. Hurting the foot is different from hurting the ankle. When you hurt your ankle, you really need to avoid straining the joint. When you hurt your foot, you have to be aware of where the hurt is so you don’t re-injure the area by overstraining it. The foot brace helped to provide support and pressure for the foot, but it didn’t help with the walking right away. Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t Binge on Exercise

I’ve talked about this before, but there’s a mentality to fitness that can healthy, but performed in the extreme – it’s anything but. I’ve never been a fan of deprivation diets. By the same token I’ve never been a fan of binge exercising either. We’ve all done it though, we’ve all felt like we weren’t meeting a program or goals and serious enough about our exercise.
